Camelon Juniors vs Sauchie

A gritty comeback from the mighty Mariners from 2-0 down to win 3-2, earned us a quarter final spot in the Alex Jack Cup.  Our highest gate so far this season meant over 170 people watched our win over Sauchie.

The visitors went a goal up after just 4 minutes as they started strong. They continued to press and had the bulk of the action in the opening exchanges.  A head injury to Don Morrison on 20 minutes forced an early change, with Ryan Batchelor taking his place. We had a few chances but a bruising first half ended with Sauchie remaining ahead by the single goal.

Sauchie again came out strong in the second half and in their first attack, they doubled their lead thanks to a strange goal that looked like it might have just been a cross.  Whatever it was, it just looped over Dean Shaw and curled in the far corner.  However, credit to the Mariners who kept their heads up and were determined to get something in this game.  A few minutes later, Kieran Anderson came on for Ross Cameron and within 9 minutes of being on the field, he started our comeback, netting his 14th league/cup goal of the season.  We continued to press and just a couple of minutes later, Greg Skinner converted a Kieran Anderson corner to score his first of the season and make it honours even.

After that goal, Ryan Kane made his first appearance of the season, replacing Connor McMullan, and we continued to press, with a few chances going begging.  How we weren’t 4 or 5 up we will never know.  Then, just as we thought we were heading into extra time, Alan Sneddon got his 3rd goal of the season just seconds before the final whistle blew.

The huge cheer from the terraces reflected the passion felt around the ground as we watched this strong comeback from the players to secure our place in the quarter finals of this cup. That round is scheduled to be played on 22 September and we wait to discover our opponent, but it will be one of either:

Edinburgh or Haddington (still to play their 2nd round match)
Hill of Beath
or Tranent

This was a really strong performance from the lads which sets us up nicely for next week’s league game against Linlithgow.  Credit to the management and coaching staff for bringing this new strength of character to the team which was clear for all to see.
