Thrilling Season Climax beckons

Next Saturday, it’s a return to East of Scotland League action for the mighty Mariners with just 7 league matches left this season. And Conference C is certainly hotting up at the top. The one league match that took place this weekend saw St Andrews take a win at Jeanfield, leaving us level on points and games played with the Perth team. Only goal difference keeps us behind them in 4th place. So here’s the current situation of games played, current points and maximum points available if all remaining games are won:

With Jeanfield and Linlithgow due to play each other twice there are options for points to be lost by both teams. Also, St Andrews are due to play Linlithgow twice and Broxburn so, with a spring in their step having beaten Jeanfield yesterday, they could have an impact on the final placings as they battle for a 5th place finish.

But regardless of that, our eyes are focused on getting the maximum possible points from our 7 games, especially our trip to Perth on April 13th when the phrase “6 pointer” will definitely be relevant.

The first milestone is to secure a top 5 finish which is pretty much set. A win on Saturday for us will make it mathematically definite that we’ll qualify for the East of Scotland Premier League next season. As for the rest, we’ll just save that for the weeks to come and keep aiming to score more goals than the opponents!

So, strap yourselves in. Nothing is certain in this league yet. The next 2 months could get bumpy!

Another win for the under 20s

We’ve been remiss in keeping you up to date with the progress of our under 20s squad, so let’s put that right now.

In the past 4 weeks this new squad has recorded victories against the 2nd and 3rd place clubs in the league. On Friday, they played against a good Dunipace team and, despite the appaling weather conditions as Storm Erik passed overhead, the prospect of a local derby gave the watching crowd an entertaining night.

The first half was dominated by some fantastic football from Camelon and our lads got their reward by going 1 nil up thanks to a Marcus Boyce goal.

The second half was all about Dunipace trying to force their way back into the game and they seemed favourite to score next. But thanks to some excellent pressing play forcing a defensive error, Marcus Boyce was there again to get his and Camelon’s second goal of the night.

Dunipace continued to try to break through a very well disciplined Camelon team but another error, this time from the Dunipace keeper, allowed Sam Colley to get our third goal of the night.

Our lads continued to be on top of the game but credit must be given to Dunipace who didn’t give up, and were rewarded with a goal following some good play that finally broke our defence down. Following that, the game became very scrappy and with 70 minutes on the clock, Dunipace made it 3-2.

But Camelon really showed their growing development and maturity on the park to see the game out and secure the 3-2 victory.

Overall, this match was a great advert for under 20s football from the two local teams.

It’s been great to see some of the under 20s coming through to first team training and being part of match days as well. One of them, Jack Frame, was rewarded with 10 minutes on the field in last week’s first team match and made a good impression.

We wish the players and coaching staff in the under 20s continued success.

Home Semi Final Joy for the Mariners

Many of you will have seen the statement issued by Kelty Hearts following the Football Nation Qualifying Cup match on Saturday regarding them unwittingly fielding a cup tied player.  The club contacted us on Sunday to inform us and apologise for the error.

We received official word today from the East of Scotland Football Association that “the Association Office Bearers have decided that Kelty Hearts be excluded from the remainder of the competition and Camelon Juniors be re-instated in their place.”

This means that we will get to play in the semi final of this competition against either Peebles Rovers, Jeanfield Swifts or Bonnyrigg Rose with the latter two teams still to play their third round match.  So we don’t know the date or the opponent, but we do know that the match will be at Carmuirs Park.  As soon as we know, we’ll let you know!

So we have the chance to continue to compete for a potential 3rd trophy of the season, with 3 others still to play for.  In the immediate future, we focus back on the league as we welcome St Andrews United to Carmuirs Park this Saturday for a 2pm kick off.

Cup Final travel information

Tomorrow (Saturday 8) we face our biggest match for some time, as we travel to Lockerbie to take on Bonnyton Thistle in the South and East Cup Winners Shield. At stake is a guaranteed place in the Scottish Cup next season which would be a first for our club.

If you plan to come along to cheer the lads on, here’s some information for you.

Team Bus

This will leave Carmuirs Park at 11am. Pleas be there in good time and have your £10 ready. We’ll be getting dropped off at The Brig pub for pre match hospitality. We should return to the Park around 7:30/8pm unless it goes to extra time of course.

Own travel

The match is at New King Edward Park, Lockerbie. You should use postcode DG11 2BL for parking and park entrance. Kick off is at 3pm.

You can park on the side of the park entrance roadway. All parking is at owners risk. The roadway is yellow lined but that was for when the Primary School was there. They have been left to deter overnight Lorry Parking.

No alcohol can be admitted into the ground. It is a local authority bylaw that alcohol cannot be consumed in public areas within the town. This is strictly enforced and there is often a Police patrol on any match days. There is a strict no smoking policy within all spectator areas.

Please note that the ground has limited catering facilities, with only hot/cold drinks and pies available. There are no bar facilities.

Unfortunately at the moment they only have an uncovered spectator area. Toilets are limited to a couple of portacabins that are just a short walk from the spectator area.

If you arrive early in Lockerbie for a bar or pre match catering, you can find those in the town centre. There are 4 hotels, 7 public bars, 2 licensed cafes, and a Greggs all within a 10-15 min walk from the Park.

South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners Shield

On Saturday 8 December, we travel to New King Edward Park in Lockerbie to take on Bonnyton Thistle in the South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners Shield.  Its a 3pm kick off.

For the uninitiated, because we won the Alex Jack Cup (that is being presented to us this Saturday – 24 November), we now face the Southern Counties FA Alba Cup winner (Bonnyton Thistle) for a guaranteed place in next season’s William Hill Scottish Cup.

So this is your chance to come and cheer on the mighty Mariners in our most important cup final for some time.  To help you do that, once again we can offer you the chance to travel on the team bus.  £10 gets you a seat on the bus that will be leaving Carmuirs Park at 11am.  If you’d like a seat, please let us know as soon as possible by dropping us a message by email or through Social Media.  You can of course make your own way there and we’d love to have as many fans as possible with us to cheer the lads on.  Note that kick off is 3pm.  Hope to see you there!

Alex Jack Cup – WINNERS!

Many of you will have seen the following statement last week from the East of Scotland Football Association:

Alex Jack Cup
The office bearers of our association met after it came to light … that both Haddington Athletic and Bo’ness United had fielded ineligible players in their semi final tie played at Haddington last Saturday. It was decided Bo’ness should be expelled from this season’s competition, while Haddington are debarred from participation in 2019/20. The clubs have the right to appeal these decisions.

It goes without saying it’s extremely disappointing this situation has arisen. It cannot be adequately emphasised how vital it is for clubs to take every step to check the eligibility of their players, in order to ensure the integrity of our competitions. Having won last Saturday’s tie Bo’ness were scheduled to meet Camelon Juniors in the final on Sunday 25 November – that this game won’t now go ahead is greatly regrettable on many levels.

Since its publication, there have been countless discussions behind the scenes to clarify and confirm the outcome, before the committee were comfortable with making any statement.

That process is now complete so we are now very happy to announce that we have won our first silverware since our transition to a senior team this season.

Camelon Juniors Chairman, Eric Henry, said “it’s a strange way to win a cup but the performance from the whole team in the Semi Final win over Broxburn was worthy of winning any cup final. They should be very proud of the result and the performance.

We now need to focus on achieving our pre-season objective of qualifying for next years William Hill Scottish Cup for the first time in the clubs history. One route for this to happen is, having won the Alex Jack Cup, to go on and win the South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners’ Shield. I look forward to seeing all our fans in Lockerbie for the final against either Bonnyton or Mid Annandale, in what could well be one of our biggest ever games.”

So the celebrations below, captured by Dan McMenamy following our semi final win against Broxburn, become the celebrations of the Alex Jack Cup Winners 2018. As soon as we know, we will let you know when we’re to be presented with the trophy.

More History in the Making

Camelon Juniors are pleased to announce that, for the first time ever, our Youth Development programme will be entering a team into the Scottish FA Youth Cup.  As this is for under 18s, we’ll be fielding a team that will be a mixture of our under 20’s, under 17’s and under 16’s squads.

We enter in the third round of the Cup and the draw was made today at Hampden.  We’ve received a home tie against last years semi finalists Kilmarnock to be played on Friday 9 November.

This is a really exciting opportunity for our lads and we wish them every success.

Match Day – South Region Challenge Cup Preview

Not only is today another match day, but it’s also a first step into another new Cup competition for our first team.  This time it is the SFA South Region Challenge Cup.  So as its new for the Club, here’s another handy guide to this competition for you, along with a look ahead to todays tie.

The South Region Challenge Cup is open to full member non-league clubs in the south of the country.  Along with an equivalent for the North Region, the Challenge Cups replaced the Scottish Qualifying Cup North and South competitions in 2007, after the SFA decided to allow full member clubs at non-league level direct entry to the Scottish Cup proper.  To compensate clubs for the demise of the tournaments, two new ones were put in their place although the North Region equivalent was scrapped in 2009.

This seasons’ competition features 69 teams:  16 from the Lowland League, 38 from the EoSFL, 14 from the SoSFL, and one amateur SFA club – Glasgow University. It is a straight knock-out tournament, without replays so extra time and penalties will be used if needed.

The current Champions are Civil Service Strollers who beat BSC Glasgow in last years final after extra time.

We join the Cup in the Second Round with today’s home time against Heston Rovers – the first meeting of the teams.  Heston play in the South of Scotland Football League and are currently sitting mid table after 6 matches with 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats and a goal difference of +5 that was boosted by a 7-0 victory last weekend.

Their Manager, Jamie Struthers is looking forward to the tie and although admitting it will be a tough test and describing his team as underdogs, he added “we will give it our best”.

In return, our manager, Gordon Herd, said “they’ll be hard-working – they’ve got pace about their side and are well organised.  We will treat it like any other game.”

So head on down to Carmuirs Park this afternoon for a 2:30pm kick off and cheer the mighty Mariners on.  It’s a cup tie so season tickets are not valid therefore entry for all is £6 or adults, £3 for concessions and accompanied under 16s remain free.

Match Day – Alex Jack Cup preview

It’s match day and today we welcome Sauchie to Carmuirs Park for the second round match in the Alex Jack Cup. Kick off is 2:30pm.
As its the first time we’ve played in this cup, we thought it worth giving you some background to this particular competition.

The Alex Jack Cup is a well established competition contested by clubs from the East of Scotland Football League who are not full members of the Scottish Football Association. It was formerly known as the East of Scotland Consolation Cup.

Only seven clubs took part last season, but that’s up to thirty this year with the influx in membership of the East of Scotland Football League. The format is straight knockout so it’s extra time and penalties if scores are level. The winner goes on to play in the South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners Shield against the Southern Counties FA Alba Cup winner for a place in the following season’s Scottish Cup. That honour went to Tynecastle last season so they’re playing in the Scottish Cup this time around.

The first round was played on August 11th but we received a bye. Results were as follows:

More History Making from the mighty Mariners

We are about to make even more history!

This weekend will see the largest number of teams ever playing as part of the CJFC family, as the youth teams seasons kick off.

In addition to our First Team playing their Football Nation Qualifying Cup match at home to Heriot Watt University (the first ever meeting of these teams), we’re so proud to say that six, yes SIX other teams will walk out onto various football parks in the area wearing the CJFC strip.  Here’s a run down of the matches:

This is an amazing step forward for a community focussed club with huge ambitions across all age groups. So by way of encouragement, here’s some words from our Head of Youth Development, Gary Clark:

As we are about to start the season with all our youth and children’s sections, I just want to take time to wish all age groups good luck for the forthcoming season.  It has been a mammoth task to get the teams up and running in such a short space of time.

I would like to thank the Chairman, Eric Henry and Club Secretary, Tony Smith, along with the rest of the committee, for their backing and patience in developing the teams to get to this stage.  I also thank them for having the belief in me to build the youth and children’s system at the club.  I would also like to say that the first team management and coaches having been fantastic regarding the children’s and youth teams set up and have given me great support since first joining the club.

While I would love to take the credit all to myself there is one special thank you I would like to make.  This goes to Allan Morrison, the under 20s Development Secretary, who has been fantastic in building the teams with me since I first joined the club.  It really has been a joint effort with a lot of phone calls in getting the teams to this stage to start the season, so, thank you Allan.  I’d also like to thank Club Chaplain, Dan Rous, who has helped in building bridges within the community and schools as we widen our reach locally.

I will finish by saying that when I took the position on as Head of Youth Development, my vision was about getting kids playing football and trying to develop them in the correct way in order for them to play through our pathway or move onto bigger and better things.  As a club we are really moving forward positively.  What we have achieved in such a sort space of time has been fantastic and has been a real team effort.  I am sure going forward, that by adding more age groups to our club, we can achieve great things at Camelon Juniors Football Club and continue to make history.
